What PS3 is better slim or fat?

The PS3 320 GB model with a MW3 or Uncharted 3 game sold for only $299.99 and including full warranty was the best unless you do like I did and replace it with a 1 TB harddrive . Had Best Buy install it for $50 and loaded over 100 games from Playstation Plus membership and purchases. Adding a LBP 2 Move Bundle and Playstation Plus membership with an internet connection will make it even better. Fat PS3 use more power and run hotter shorting there life. Backward Compatible PS3 models have not been produced for 4 years and there are YLOD temporary fixes that should cause serious concerns about purchasing a used fat PS3. Rumors are that a PS3 super Slim will be available in the fall 2012 with HDDs as large as 500 GB. Rumor proved true and now the debate should focus on which is better the super slim or the slim Of course the PS4 will be in a whole new ballpark.

Fat: It takes up more space than the slim and (in my opinion) is kinda ugly compared to the slim. The first ones has 4 usb slots and those have backwards compatibility enabling them to play some of the PS2 game titles. Also, if you can find one with an older firmware, the fat has Other Os which is a Linux system on the ps3 and this system is removed if the PS3 is allowed to be updated

That means it can never be online or have 3D Move or any of the newer PS3 capabilities Perfect for those who can not get the internet but for most it would be far from better

Actually this describes only Generation 1 the 20 GB model and the 60 GB model which were the most expensive to produce PS3 models and had Hardware based PS2 emulation. Generation 2 started with the 60 GB model made in March 2007 and 80 GB models made in August 2007 and had Partially Software based PS2 emulation instead of the fully hardware based emulation. All of these models had flash card readers, SACD playback, four USB ports, and Sixaxis Controllers . The other Operating system was removed from all PS3 model in later PS3 updates Firmware version 3.21 and now only exists in models that have never been updated and must therefore also retain any bugs that the system updates have corrected between then and now. There are lawsuits asking for Sony to reinstate this feature or offer some sort of compensation. They were never called the PHAT or Phat (pretty hot and Tempting) but the fat compared to the slimline and named after the slimline was released to describe all of the 3 generations of the earlier PS3 models. The 3rd Generation includes the 40 GB November 2007 (NA release) 80 GB August 2008 (NA release) and 160 GB November 2008 model (NA release) with 2 USB ports, not backward compatible with PS2, and the DualShock 3 controller and were the actual production models the PS3 slim replaced. The original 60 GB PS3 release retains the highest resale value and also had the highest price and sold for the biggest loss to the Sony Corporation and might be the best PS3 made if it were new in the box and not over 3 years old with an unverifiable history of the time of actually used.

Slim: Is much smaller than the phat version of the system, and the surface is no longer Piano Black which means it gets less finger prints on it (not that you would be rubbing around on it anyway). It has 2 usb slots. No backwards compatibility which means it can only play ps1 and ps3 games. Other Os was removed in a firmware update before the slim was released which means NONE of the slims support it, but, there is a person working on a custom firmware which re-enables the Other Os by restoring an old PUP file but it can only be installed if the system is version 3.15(or below), the current version is 3.30.

System already was reduced to 2 USB ports and adapters exist to turn any single port into 4 more USB ports. System was already unable to play PS2 games, but the PS3 game inventory was already over 1,100 games including many being sold at greatly reduced prices for new games and a market flooded with unwanted used PS3 games. The operating system was already changed before the PS3 slim and is considered a complex problem and the option of other operating systems is not supported on any PS3 model. The PS3 slim model has a harddrive of 120GB and also the 250 GB model which is only $50 more at a USA retail price of $349.99. The PS3 slim also includes a Bravia Sync XMB control which allows the PS3 to be controlled with the HDTV remote for DVD and Blue-ray for Sony HDTV connected with HDMI cables. The sync also allows the HDTV to switch to the PS3 and or turn on when the PS3 has been turned on and switch back when it is turned off which is a nice feature when you want to quickly go back to watching HDTV

Edit: From an IT standpoint, the original production run of the PS3 was the best system they've produced. they have slowly removed many of the extra features in each subsequent production run. So, if you are able to find one of the original production run PS3s, you will have the full package. If you buy anything after the first production run, you're missing a lot. PS2 games, for instance will not run on the newer PS3s, as well as many other "cost cutting" things that have been removed.

The above answer disregards the vast improvements in technology in the past 5 or 6 years. The new system is more reliable and that is a major advantage. Also the 60 GB model has an overheating problem that can be temporary fixed and that means the used console newly purchased could break in the first 30 to 90 days Sure it could play many PS2 titles, but overheated because it used too much power. Even most Fat PS3s lost things like a card reader that can just be plugged into a USB port. They also lost 4 USB ports, but I added a hub to my two USB ports for a few dollars and now have 5. From an IT standpoint the old PS3 was only better if you value PS2 games and are unable to except the fact that PS2 games are inferior.

The above was true when the PS3 was released. but the components of the system have all had 6 years of advancement of technology. Sure some people might find playing PS2 games a nice benefit but really the games are not PS3 games and to me they are not what I would play on my PS3. Also there were problems with a PS3 overheating and the new ones use less power. If you want to have all the updates the separate operating system has been eliminated and if not you can not have 3D or Move controllers or many other new features. I have no problem using a hub for the 4 USB ports or a reader to load flash cards which are 2 of the eliminated features besides PS2 compatibility and separate operating system.

The 60GB fat is probably the most desirable PS3, but it goes for 100s, even 1000s of dollars on ebay, so your best bet is to to get the 120GB slim, which is your best alternative!
