Is it better to have a gun, or a gun and a knife?
A bayonet is a rifle with a short, removable blade mounted on the end of the barrel. The answer depends on the situation, but usually a bayonet will be better than a rifle due to the fact that it has all of the properties of a rifle, with the addition of a blade.
A rifle, because it is longer.

He tought them to be better soliders, how to use bayonets and knifes and hand- to- hand combat. Hope this helps! :)
The first bayonets slid into the barrel of the weapon blocking it from firing. That is why they didn't use bayonets. Sometimes they do - if they have rifles that can take bayonets. And have brought the bayonets too. It basically transforms the rifle into a poor kind of stabbing spear. Not the kind of fighting many people would volunteer for. And sticking a long, sharp blade at the end of your rifle makes it heavier and more difficult to shoot well with. And more dangerous to be around, even for the members of your own troop. Accidental stabbings were common. It's pretty much a desperate, last-ditch option, as it means you're expecting to go into hand-to-hand combat. Which is even more messy and dangerous than "regular" war. Usually, armies will avoid that as much as possible.
I know only of the controversy created by the Maori use of fixed bayonets against German paratroopers on the Greek island of Crete in 1941. It is quite possible that they used their bayonets hand-to-hand somewhere in World War 2. If I find out, I will update this answer.
From the Vietnam War rifles: M-14 & M-16; the bayonet has a steel ring on the upper hand guard and a notch cut into the rear of the handle. At the command of "Fix bayonets!" Infantrymen slide the steel ring over the flash suppresser and the notch slides into an extended piece of steel which is attached to the bottom of the rifle's barrel. The bayonet is now locked into place.
A bayonet.
The same as it has been since time began. Any time you are close enough to physically touch your enemy you are in hand to hand combat. Fists, knives and bayonets, even rocks and rifles are used to hit your enemy.
A pistol CAN be held in one hand. A Rifle requires two hands.
I don't know what you want to compare the rifle to, to list its disadvantages. Typically, people call most long guns a "rifle," as opposed to a hand gun (although almost all handguns have rifled barrels). In a firefight, advantage is going to be with the person who has a long gun (rifle)--especially a high-powered, semiautomatic rifle. Maybe concealing a rifle is difficult, and it is usually heavier than a handgun. So carrying a rifle isn't always practical. Most military people will say that you use your handgun to fight to your rifle. Meaning a handgun is better than nothing, but if you have a rifle nearby, you'd be better off using it.
On a rifle, it is the part of the rifle your non-dominant hand holds to steady the barrel.
