A carbon compound involves alkanes and alkenes. E.g

1 carbon = meth

2 carbons = eth

3 carbons = prop

4 carbons = but

5 carbons = pent

6 carbons = hex.

Now, alkanes contain carbon and hydrogen in SINGULAR bonds, while alkenes contain carbon and hydrogen in DOUBLE bonds.

Depending on how many carbon atoms are involved in the compound is the name of it. E.g a six double bonded carbon compound is called HEXENE, while a six singluar bonded carbon compound is called HEXANE (hense the list of number of carbons in the first list stated)
