Chlorophyll is a green pigment (one of several photosynthetic pigments) that plays a crucial role in producing food for green plants by synthesizing simple sugars (glucose) from carbon dioxide and water in the process of photosynthesis. The by-product of photosynthesis is free oxygen. So chlorophyll is a vital chemical in maintenance of life on Earth, providing food and oxygen for living things.

The reaction preformed by chlorophyll can be expressed as:

6CO2 + 6H20 + Sunlight => C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2

6 molecules of Carbon dioxide and 6 molecules of Water are converted into

1 molecule of glucose sugar and 6 molecules of oxygen.

  • Chlorophyll is found in chloroplasts, an organelle found in the cells of the plant; chloroplasts are found in the green portions of the plant (leaves and stems).
  • Green plants which can produce their own food are called autotrophs (or autotrophic).
  • Chlorophyll is found in two different forms (chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b) which absorb slightly different wavelengths of light. Plants use the blue and red portion of the visible light spectrum and reflect green light giving plants their green color
  • Interestingly, the chemical structure of Chlorophyll is almost identical to that of heamoglobin found in the blood in our bodies - the difference is that heamoglobin uses an iron (Fe) atom to carry oxygen, where as chlorophyll uses Magnesium (Mg) as an oxygen carrier.

Chlorophyll is the substance inside of green plants. When weather blocks the sun or it shows only partially over a long period of time, the green plant becomes a range of different colors: red, yellow, brown, orange, even sometimes gray. Chlorophyll is basically the glucose - sugar substance in plants. This is a pretty general idea of what chlorophyll is.

What are some examples of chlorophyll?

Some examples of chlorophyll are chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll c1, and chlorophyll c2. These are the most common types of chlorophyll found in plants and algae. Chlorophyll gives plants their green color and is essential for photosynthesis.

What are the different types of chlorophyll What is chlorophyll a and b?

the chlorophyll A and chlorophyll B

What type of chlorophyll does a reaction contain?

chlorophyll a Chlorophyll A

What is two type of chlorophyll?

There is chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b.

Chlorophyll a

What masked by green pigments in the spring and summer?

chlorophyll

What is the primary pigment in photosynthesis?

The primary photosynthetic pigment that is found in plants is Chlorophyll A. Chlorophyll A is responsible for giving the plants a green appearance.

Why is chlorophyll a also called chlorophyll 680?

Because Chlorophyll 680 is Chlorophyll a's most sufficient wave length

Chlorophyll--There are three vowels in the word chlorophyll.

What is the name of the green pigment in a leaf?

The green pigment present in the leaf cell of a plant is called 'chlorophyll'.

What is the difference in the different types of chlorophyll?

There are chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. in chlorophyll a there is more energy required than in chlorophyll b. chlorophyll a have an absorption peak at 700 nm in contrast to the 680nm of chlorophyll b. chlorophyll a creates a more greener pigment whereas the chlorophyll b has a more yellow appearance of leaves in the fall. there are also other pigments like carotenes which produce the red in autumn.

What roll does chlorophyll play in photosynthesis and where is chlorophyll found?

Chlorophyll is found inside the leaves. Chlorophyll captures the sun's rays and converts them to food.
