Mostly their composition. Inner planets are made of heavy solid materials.
Outer planets are made of lighter elements, primarily gases.
Also, there is the Asteroid Belt, which is between the inner and outer planets.

∙ 12y agoThe general answer is the asteroid belt, however, technically, that is wrong. The dividing line is called the ice line [See related question] where it was, then, cold enough for the Giant outer planets to form.
