What is cretinism?
Cretinism is a condition of severely stunted physical and
mental growth due to untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid
hormones (hypothyroidism). The term cretin refers to a
person so affected1.
Cretinism is a condition of hypothyroidism during fetal life, infancy, and childhood. Characteristics include both severe stunted body growth and mental retardation. It is caused by a deficiency of Iodine, lack of a thyroid gland, or inability of the thyroid gland to produce enough hormones that are crucial to the development of a child. Cretinism can be prevented in one way by adding iodine into the persons diet.
What condition of arrested physical and mental development results from a congenital lack of thyroid secretion?
I'm not sure its popular! It is prevalent in Africa because the water they drink does not have added Iodine as most western developed countries do, and also because they have a low iodine diet which can lead to issues with the thyroid gland (cretinism in children, Thyroiditis/hashimoto's/Ord's in teens and adults). .
Thyroxine is the precursor to active thyroid hormone, which is essential for life. Thyroid hormone also plays an important role in brain development. A child with untreated low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) will develop a condition known as cretinism, which is marked by severe physical and mental abnormalities.
You mean Iodine? Iodine is especially important for children because it helps the body develope and the thyroid gland to function. A deficiency of the right kind of iodine (not just in iodized salt) may cause mental retardation, goiters (growths on the thyroid), and cretinism (a condition causing hypothyroidism, deafness and muteness, and certain movement disorders).
Somatotropic hormone is another name for growth hormone. If a body does not have enough it will not grow properly. One condition that results from lack of somatotropic hormone is called cretinism. Not only will the body not from properly, but there will likely also be a lack of mental development as well. The gland that is responsible for secreting somatotropic hormone is the anterior lobe of the pituitary.
