What is crush syndrome?

Crush syndrome is caused by a crushing injury to skeletal muscle. The problem is that is causes major damage to other parts of the body including the kidneys. The kidneys can fail. The kidneys seem to be affected by toxins produced by the crushed muscles. Sometimes this is called the "smiling death" as the person will be given pain relievers and then removed from when he is being crushed. It could be under fallen concrete or buried alive. The sudden release can cause quick death if the person is not properly prepared before.
