Cryptosporidium is a parasitic organism that infects the small intestine of

numerous mammals, including humans, causing the disease cryptosporidiosis.

It is found in infected feces. A person or animal is infected when they

swallow the parasite.

Symptoms of Cryptosporidiosis include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps and

fever. There is no cure or treatment for cryptosporidiosis, however, a healthy

person can fully recover although it can take up to 30 days. For those with

already weakened immune systems, including people with AIDS, cancer,

transplant patients and the elderly it is possible for symptoms to persist

indefinitely and cause death.
