In my personal experience, emo originated from the genre of music, emocore. If you are emo you don't have to cut yourself, be depressed, or be overly emotional. There are many stereotypes for emo people. Just like there are stereotypes for any other clique. For example, that jocks are dumb, or popular girls are mean.
I'm EMO and I believe in GOD and I'm religious too so I think that emo people DONT go to hell also emo people are friendly and some are kind but everyone has a different opinion though.
Many people under the sterotype "emo" like to believe that when they die they go on to a place called The Black Parade. This was picked up in 2006's hit song "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance and the video shows people of Emo Culture marching behind the band. It provides a sense of security in the emo community and unifies them. As an Alternative/Emo/Scene/Punk whatever you want to call it I'd like to believe in the Black Parade even with no evidence to support it
The popularity of the emo style and genre of music has to do with its widespread appeal to teenagers seeking to create or find their own identity, especially given the often close-minded and uninviting culture that exists in North American schools. The hairstyles and clothing are exotic and unique.
You don't have too cut to be emo, So yes you are emo if you don't cut
Emo in Japanese is エモ
no, being goth or emo isn't a culture.
WHAT! are you like serious! emo and scene is sO big right now...! I'm sure the culture is very much alive :)
There aren't really any stages to being emo. Emo was originally a style of music, but it has become a style and culture.
It's not gone
I'm trying, and I know people, even in my school, that are emo.

"Emo" is a culture unto itself unless you want to caterorgierize it as a subculture of goth or punk. To answer your initial question emo started in the 60's with a band called Rites Of Spring. Or that's atleast when it really became known about.
No. I'm not, many of my friends and people I know are not. Emo is no longer just a style of music. It is also a style and culture.
I think your question is when did the word emo begin being used? In the book "Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide To Emo Culture" The author says the first time the word was used was in 1997. Any answers about "emo" history or culture, etc. can be answered in this book, not to mention its HILARIOUS! Actually in an episode of MASH, BJ used the word emo to describe Hawkeye. He called him Captain Emo when Hawkeye was depressed over a letter he had received. So the word emo had been used much earlier then first thought.
like do u mean stereotype? it means when you categorize a group of people. and a "emo" is a sub culture of goth that "wears less black" and is "happier"
In a strict sense it is a musical style, but the term is now often used to describe a particular fashion and culture.
yes some ppl do but not me...
