The town prepares for the return of the comet by holding a festival. In Mr. Tanner's class, Stefan shows how knowledgeable he is on historical dates, which impresses his classmates but angers Tanner. Later, Elena goes to visit Stefan at the Boarding House but encounters his brother, Damon, instead and he makes her uneasy when he brings up Katherine. As soon as Stefan arrives in the room, she notices a lot of uneasiness between them and opts to leave.

Stefan also goes to see Vicki at the hospital and compels her, so she thinks an animal attacked her. Damon teases him over the fact that not drinking human blood has caused his powers to weaken and Stefan asks him what he's up to but Damon refuses to answer the question.

Vicki later gets out of hospital and believes she recognises Damon from somewhere. He later attacks her again and this leads to a confrontation on a roof top between the brothers and Stefan tells Damon to expose him, as he'll be killed and finally free of his evil brother. Damon lets Vicki go and tells Stefan that he's thinking of staying in town.

Elena visits Stefan again at the Boarding House and they talk to each other about their feelings and share their first kiss. Elsewhere, Damon picks up Caroline and the two of them have sex in her bedroom, leading to him savagely attacking her when his desire for blood kicks in.

Elena and Bonnie are being held hostage by Anna and Ben. Stefan enlists Damon's help to save Elena, even though he knows that Damon blames him for Katherine being taken away. Elena and Bonnie try to escape from Ben but fail.

Damon and Anna meet and discuss getting her mother out of the tomb as well as Katherine. Damon pays Grams a visit, looking for Bonnie, but Grams knows who he is and causes him pain before making him leave. As soon as Stefan rescues Elena and Bonnie, they ask Grams to help open the tomb.

Elena pays Damon a visit and says she will help him get into the tomb. He admits he never compelled Elena when they were in Georgia as they were having fun together. Grams and Bonnie cast a spell to open the and Stefan and Damon get inside but Grams says she cast a spell whereby no vampire can leave when they go in. The spell doesn't work and Stefan can get out easily. Damon is enraged to find that Katherine is not in the tomb with the other vampires and throws a bag of blood against the wall.

Meanwhile, the other residents of Mystic Falls gather for a party in the woods. Caroline and Matt discuss their relationship. Jeremy has invited Anna to attend and when they kiss her vampire face appears but before Jeremy can really react, he's knocked out by Ben.

Anna also manages to enter the tomb and attacks Elena, biting her so her blood will bring her mother, Pearl, back to life. They escape.

Everyone manages to get out of the tomb but Grams and Bonnie have forgotten to seal it. Damon looks devastated when he emerges and Elena hugs him, as Stefan looks on.

Anna and Pearl return to the motel room where an angry Damon awaits. Angered by the realisation that Anna never intended helping him, he attempts to strangle Pearl before she admits that the guard of the tomb was also in love with Katherine. Anna admits that she last saw Katherine in 1983, who admitted she never cared about Damon.

Later, Bonnie sees Grams stretched out on the bed and covers her, thinking she's asleep. In fact, she's dead and Bonnie tries to search for a spell to revive her but it is no use. At the Salvatore Boarding House, Damon is staring into the fire with tears in his eyes. Stefan says nothing but sits down in the seat next to him.

Back at the tomb, a corpse revives with a bag of blood in hand. It manages to open the tomb and emerges. It's the guard.

Stefan and Elena are left without options after Katherine delivers an ultimatum. Katherine tells Stefan that she will kill everyone in Elena's life unless they get back together, but Stefan still refuses. Katherine then tells him she will kill Elena too. Stefan attacks her, which causes her to break free from the chains he has been using to hold her. But Katherine tells Stefan that she has been drinking a bit of vervain for the last 145 years and has developed an immunity to it. She stabs Stefan when Elena turns up at the house - after leaving Caroline who was attempting to break Stefan and Elena up - they both meet and Katherine said Elena was asking the wrong questions. Throughout the episode Damon tries to get Mason to touch anything silver. Mason realizes this and decides to call a truce. They shake hands, but Damon has other plans. Damon corners him in the parking lot and stabs him with a silver knife, which backfires when Mason says its all a myth and that they are now enemies. As she watches the full moon rise, Katherine remembers what happened back in 1864, after Stefan and Damon had been both shot in an attempt to save her. She goes to Stefan and kisses him, and later says that she'll be back for him, and that she loves him. Stefan and Elena pretend that they are no longer dating so that Katherine won't hurt anybody. They "break up" within earshot of Caroline and Damon.
