you can use filter paper to catch substances in a solution. for example say you were growing crystals and now you just want the crystals and not the solution they grew in. put the filter paper into another beaker so the paper looks like a funnel, then pour the substance into the paper. the substance will leak through the paper but the crystals with remain in the paper.

Other:

The purpose of a filter paper in a laboratory is to more or lessseparatemixtures. (e.g. sand and water- the sand isn't soluble, and therefore won't dissolve in the water. Therefore, filter paper can easily be used toseparatethe two).

Filter paper (filtration) isn't the most efficient way toseparatemixtures that don't dissolve together, but it gets most of the job done.

Why is a fluted filter paper used in gravity filtration?

By fluting the filter paper we can maximize the rate at which the solvent may flow through the filter paper. This will increase the surface area of the air flown into the flask along the sides to permit rapid pressure equalization.

What a filter funnel and paper used for?

Usually, it's used to separate a precipitate from the liquid in the solution. The filter paper is folded into quarters and placed in the funnel. The solution is then poured onto the filter paper, where the liquid filters through and the precipitate stays on the filter paper. The precipitate can then be saved or discarded, depending on which part of the solution you want.

What is 0.22 micron filter paper?

1 micron = 0,000039 inches = 0,001 mm 0,22 micron filter means that it is a filter which will filter particles above (0,22 x 0,001 mm) 0,22 µm (micrometer) in size. Filter paper (or paper filter) is the type of filter used.

Why is fluted filter paper used instead of an ordinary filter paper cone?

Fluted paper is used for filtering because it offers a greater surface area. By fluting the paper, the surface area can be increased by quite a bit, depending upon the number of flutes and the depth of each flute.
