An insoluble salt is formed--commonly called soap scum. Soap is the potassium or sodium salt of fatty acids. When calcium takes the place of the sodium or potassium, a calcium salt is formed. This takes the form of a whitish precipitate.

Soap is the sodium salt of long chain fatty acid which is soluble in water with calcium chloride soap forms insoluble salt of calcium.

This reaction will result in soap scum. When calcium chloride from hard water reacts with the fatty acids within the soap, soap scum is what forms.

calcium does not react wite chloride(Cl-) even in ware because calcium chloride is soluble in water, although calcium reacts with chlorine(Cl2) on heating and forms calcium chloride.

What does sodium hydroxide and a fat make?

Sodium hydroxide and fat react to form fatty acid salts (essentially soap), and glycerin.

Why does hard water consumes lot of soap?

beacuse it contain dissolve salts of calcium and magnesium salts and other heavy metals and it does not form lather with soap readily..

Metal ions in water can react with soap to form what?

Soap scum

What creates soap scum?

Most soaps contain sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids. These are water soluble compounds that help carry away oils and other water insoluble substances. Soap scum forms when these salts react with calcium and magnesium compound in the water. The newly formed calcium and magnesium salts are insoluble in water, and so forma coating on surfaces. This is more likely to happen if you have hard water, water rich in calcium and magnesium.

Why is soap neutralized by metal salts?

Salt is added to soap solution to help precipitation and separation of salt.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using detergents instead of soap in hard water areas?

detergents, unlike soap, do not react with the magnesium and calcium salts found in hard water to form scum. they are more efficient cleaners than soap. but they can be very harsh on skin/hair for humans and also, some types of detergents are non biogedradable.

Why is soap not suitable for washing clothes when water is hard?

detergents are the sodium salts of alkyl suphonic acids. They contain a sulphonic acid group istead of a carboxyl group. soaps are made up of Na and Mg salts of organic fatty acids. detergents react even with water since they do not form scum, due to solubility of Naq and Mg salts in water. While soaps donot lather with hard water as they form scum.

Why does soep dissolve?

Soap is made out of a mixture of hydrophilic salts, which is why it dissolves in water.

Is soap a element or mixture?

Soaps are salts of fatty acids and hence are compounds.
