Usually people categorize the food groups into six groups, although the last group can be split into two:
1) Starches (bread...)
2) Vegetables (carrots, lettuce, broccoli...)
3) Fruits (apples, peaches, Oranges)
4) Dairy (milk, yogurt...)
5) Protein (poultry, beef, fish...)
6) Fats and Oils/ 7)Sugary Foods (candy, french fries...)
