The Black Hills of South Dakota are known as Ȟe Sápa in Lakota, Moʼȯhta-voʼhonáaeva in Cheyenne, awaxaawi shiibisha in Hidatsa. They are called the Black Hills because, from a distance, the thick forest of pine and spruce trees cover the slopes making them appear black.

The Black Hills are located in western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, covering an area 125 miles long and 65 miles wide.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is located in the Black Hills. The Black Hills are also home to Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Harney Peak, Custer State Park (the largest state park in South Dakota), Bear Butte State Park, Devil's Tower National Monument, and Crazy Horse Memorial.

The Black Hills National Forest covers an area of over 1.25 million acres (5,066 km²).

The George S. Mickelson Trail is a multi-use path that travels 110 miles through the Black Hills. The trail follows the abandoned track of the historic railroad route from Edgemont to Deadwood.
