John C. Frémont was famous for exploring the West and being part of the Mexican-American War conquest of California. He was nicknamed "The Pathfinder". On July 3, 1861 he was appointed by Lincoln as a Major General and put in charge of the Department of the West, which started from Illinois, crossing the Mississippi River, up to the Rocky Mountains.
