In Japanese, "kara" means empty and "te" means hand. Karate is a non weapons based martial art that was created in Okinawa because the emperor had banned all weapons and the villagers needed to protect themselves.

So they made karate an open hand or fist style fighting that would protect them. Karate today has been westernised a bit more it is more today about competition and self defence. Depending on the school, the art of Karate still has the core values and respects of the old days.

The karate uniform is called a "dogi" or "gi" pronounced gee.

Karate is sport about self protection, self control, self discipline and it gains you confidence.

A karat signifies how pure gold is and the higher the more gold there is. Pure gold, which is 100%, is too soft to use so it often has other metals mixed in to make more durable.
