Sierra Leone has a two-season tropical climate. It was accordingly lush and fertile until deforestation became rife in the last couple of decades, owing to profitable industry such as mining and farming. Things now seem to be looking up, and like all tropical areas, if caught in time and the careless handling of the land reduced, the land will regenerate. We live in hope.

It started off like this:My Highschool friends have begun to suspect I haven't told them the full story of my life."Why did you leave Sierra Leone?""Because there is a war.""Did you witness some of the fighting?""Everyone in the country did.""You mean you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?""Yes, all the time.""Cool."I smile a little."You should tell us about it sometime.""Yes, sometime."And that is the prologue. He starts off in New York at like age 17 or something (for the prologue) but when you read the first couple of pages he's 12 years old and in Sierra leone.
