In Britain, a 'Public' school is actually a private (fee paying) school, especially one of the great historic institutions such as Eton, Harrow, Rugby etc. To avoid confusion, schools that are known in other countries as public schools (i.e. ones run by the state and funded by the taxpayer) are in Britain called 'State' schools.
