Synergism, in reference to drugs, means that one drug, Tylenol for instance, has the usual pain relief effect. Another drug like Oxycodone, also has the usual pain relief effect as well. But when you combine the two drugs you get Percocet, which is much stronger than the individual drugs are. Kinda like saying 1+1=3. When you combine them they have a far greater effect that they would alone.

Drug synergy occurs when drugs can interact in ways that enhance or magnify one or more effects, or side-effects, of those drugs. This is sometimes exploited in combination preparations, such as codeine mixed with acetaminophen as a pain reliever. However, the side effects can be on the 'bad' side and using two or more that act the same way as far as these bad side effects, can produce terrible results. Both side have to be looked at carefully before using.
