low ionization energy of the element which has to form the cation(+ive ion), and high electron affinity of the element which has to form anion(-ive ion), and a much the lattice energy will be the atoms will be more pron to form ionic bonds.....and the molecule will be more stable.

The distance between the valency electrons, which partake in bonding, and the nucleus which contains the protons they are attracted to due to their opposite charges. Also whether the element/molecule is loosing or gaining electrons during the bonding.

  • if an atom is a metal/needs to loose electrons to complete the outer shell, the larger the atom, the more reactive it is. this is due to the fact the atom is less able to hold on to its surplus electrons as their electrostatic attraction to the protons is lessened by distance and also shielding from inner shells of electrons.
  • If an atom is non-metal/needs to gain electrons, the smaller the atom, the more reactive it is. This is because the attractive force of the protons in the nucleus is less shielded and so more able to attract new electrons to complete its outer shell.
