Jefferson had 17 days to write the Declaration and wrote the first draft in a day or two. He rented a room not far from the state house and wrote it with a few books and pamphlets. His preamble was an afterthought and the document was an expression of an ideal. When Jefferson went to the second continental congress he was a replacement for his cousin Peyton Randolph. Seen as Randolph's political heir he wasn't happy to go and felt like the real work of the revolution was in Virginia. He hated cities, missed his wife, and didn't like public speaking. He wanted to be sent home from the first day. While there he became the draftsman of congress and produced written assignments, drafting memos, and writing declarations. He was happy not to be required to speak in public and it gave him time to read. He didn't think it unusual to find himself assigned to a committee to produce a draft for the Declaration and that he was writing the document alone. The other committee members had more important things to do and Jefferson had all ready basically written it already called A Declaration of the Causes and Necessity for Taking up Arms and in May/June of 1776 been working on a draft of a new constitution for Virginia. He did the draft ran it by Adams and Franklin and went back how to get out of Philadelphia . He was finally able to go home in September.
