Some came to escape religious persecution in their homeland. Pilgrims and Puritans are examples of religious groups that came to America. Some came to escape political persecution. Debtors were sometimes given a choice of paying off a debt while residing in a British cell or go to America as an indentured servant or to work for the person who paid his debt owed. Families came to seek a better life. The old saying that a man wants his children to be better off than he is, is just that--an old saying and it applied during the colonial times. And, many came simply for the adventure.The colonial history of the United States covers the history from the start of European settlement and especially the history of the thirteen colonies of Britain until they declared independence in 1776. In the late 16th century, England, France, Spain and the Netherlands launched major colonization programs in eastern North America.
