What is osteocyte?
An osteocyte, a star-shaped cell, is the most abundant cell found in compact bone. Cells contain a nucleus and a thin ring of cytoplasm. When osteoblasts become trapped in the matrix they secrete, they become osteocytes. Osteocytes are networked to each other via long cytoplasmic extensions that occupy tiny canals called canaliculi, which are used for exchange of nutrients and waste. The space that an osteocyte occupies is called a lacuna (Latin for a pit). Although osteocytes have reduced synthetic activity and, like osteoblasts are not capable of mitotic division, they are actively involved in the routine turnover of bony matrix, through various mechanosensory mechanisms. They destroy bone through a rapid, transient (relative to osteoclasts) mechanism called osteocytic osteolysis. Osteoblasts/osteocytes develop in mesenchyme. Hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate is deposited around the cell.
Osteoblast builds up bone and is found in immature bone but osteocyte is a mature bone cell found in mature bone tissue. Read More

you would find an osteocyte in bone. Osteocytes help protect and support our bodies and bone is highly vascular( which means it contains blood vessels) Osteocytes also help store calcium. Read More

What route is taken by nutrients through a bone starting with periosteum and ending with an osteocyte in a lacuna?
The circulatory system brings blood containing nutrients and oxygen to the periosteum, which covers the bone. The periosteum is a thin membrane that contains nerves and blood vessels. Its main function is to provide nourishment to the bone. From the periosteum, nutrients and oxybgen go through the perforating canals to the central canal, and then to the canaliculi. The osteocyte nearest the central canal passes nutrients to the next osteocyte with arm-like extensions that extend… Read More

Is a mature bone cell formed when an osteoblast becomes surrounded by its own matrix and entrapped in a lacuna?
An osteocyte is a mature bone cell formed when an osteoblast becomes surrounded by its own matrix and entrapped in a lacuna. Osteocytes osteocyte Read More
An osteocyte is a mature bone cell, and is eukaryotic. It has no major differences than in regular animal cells, except for its canaliculi, which are small membrane protruding parts on the cell, which make it able to connect with other osteocytes and do their job. Mainly, an osteocyte has all eukaryotic parts, though it is not able to produce. Things such as Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, ER, microfilaments/microtubules, etc. are present. Good luck and I… Read More

An osteon is the functional unit of cortical bone. Osteons contain osteocytes, which are cells that produce bone matrix. Read More
Osteoblasts are the cells that develop osseous tissue. When the osseous tissue has formed completely, then the osteoblast becomes an osteocyte, a mature bone cell. Read More
How does an osteocyte located near a central canal pass nutrients to osteocytes located far from a central canal?

An osteocyte is a bone cell. It can live as long as the bone exists in the body, and it works to break down old bony matrix so that new matrix can take it's place. Read More

How is it possible that most osteocytes are far removed from blood vessels but still receive blood- borne nutrients?
each osteocyte is interconnected with other osteocrytes via canaliculi. Canaliculi are tube-like tunnels that transport nutrients to the osteocytes, from the blood vessels Read More
Osteocytes repair cracks in bones, and help bones grow. They repair the cracks by releasing new proteins on them called calcium. Osteocytes are like the maintainence for bones. Without them you would crumple or stay the same size you were when you were born. They are very helpful! Read More
