In the prologue to Henry V, Shakespeare talks about a "wooden O". But that was not the Globe Theatre he was talking about. Henry V was written before the Globe was built. He was probably talking about The Curtain Playhouse.
Well this may not answer your questin in 1500's / 1600's he wrote plays. It started in the European/ Asian countries and then spread to Africa in 1673 ( after he died) then the ship Maylfower on its return to America bought actors who started playing it in 1743. So the answer to your question is No, when he was alive, yes, when he died. Also he wrote 155 sonnets, even though 154 was thought before this was discovered days ago.
