If a successor was being crowned, it would mean that the previous monarch had died or abdicated. So a Queen would not be invited back to crown their successor because she would be dead (or had abdicated).

However, HM Queen Elizabeth II did crown her son, Prince Charles, as Prince of Wales, at Caernarfon Castle, Wales, in 1969.
