What is a reCAPTCHA code?
A reCAPTCHA code is a form of CAPTCHA - Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. CAPTCHAs are a form of Turing test - this is a test made by a British man named "Alan Turing", designed to test an ability for a computer or machine to display intelligent behaviour. However, CAPTCHAs are specifically designed to be difficult to interpret by computers. This is usually used to prevent computers from automatically signing up for a mail account, for example, millions of times. Disputably, reCAPTCHA is the most popular CAPTCHA system currently in use. reCAPTCHA attempts to glean another benefit out of making people enter seemingly arbitrary words into their browsers: they also help in the digitalization of old books!

How do you complete the last question on the twitter signups which asks for you to type two words?
Type the two words into this box. This is intended to prove that you are a human being and not making an account as a computer program. Sightless people can use the Audio CAPTCHA feature: some words will be played audibly, and you need to type down as many as possible. This type of bot-checker is known as a CAPTCHA - a Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart. Twitter uses ReCAPTCHA to provide its CAPTCHA service. ReCAPTCHA is used to digitise books from digital scannings, and also old radio plays (with the Audio version). You can learn more at the ReCAPTCHA site.
I have noticed that when typing over the recaptcha words they got harder than a couple months before?

How does ReCaptcha work?
ReCaptcha is a spam-fighting program invented by the Carnegie Mellon University in order to prevent spammers from invading websites like Yahoo!, Google, and others. It tests the human ability to read, and using that people are fighting spam as well as taking that 10 seconds of typing to digitize books. The tiny, wiggly type is what computers can't read from old books or newspapers, so Internet users are digitizing medieval scripts, Bibles, even the New York Times Archive, while fighting spam, all at the same time.

What type of CAPTCHA signs are there and what do they mean?
When you are saying CAPTCHA signs that is a little confusing...CAPTCHA are only going to show up letter and/or symbols for Text-Bases Authentication and RECAPTCHA will show you any random 2 word combinations. Any website that has a comments/forums/blogs page usually requires some kind of text-based Authentication such a ReCaptcha. Although it is a good tool you still have issues...Cannot tell the difference between a human or BOT -- Hard to read verbiage -- Inappropriate words combined together -- Still receiving SPAM -- Not very secure - etc.... You want to look for Image-Based Authentication products to help make your password more secure and eliminate the risk of SPAM, some companies will allow you to customize these images and even advertise for example Confident Technologies out of California has a really good product.
What do you do when you try to post a message and a white box comes up?
This is a known issue that pops up when reCAPTCHA.net is blocked by your firewall (usually because it isn't whitelisted). If you are trying to connect from school, you may very likely have this problem. WikiAnswers now uses reCAPTCHA to help curve the chatting. (And digitize books at the same time!) Currently, the only way around the problem is to allow reCAPTCHA.net. If reCAPTCHA.net is allowed, and you are still having problems, post in the Community forum.

Why are email accounts needed to use a social networking site?
We don't need them in 2011, they are useless. The email address thing is out-dated, it is just stupid that we need an email address to open an account anywhere, even some email address providers require an email address to obtain an account with them - what the hell ? I want a Google account = I need an email address (that I don't have), so I create one just for the activation thing, then I forget it and never come back. Same with Facebook... We can use Facebook without an email address, stop mixing both services. If you're a forum administrator, please kill the email address. Do I need an email address to post this message ? NO, there is a reCAPTCHA that proves I am human, that is enough. And if I want to get notifications via email, I will opt-in. Thanks.
