Reflection is where the light hits the surface and `bounces` back off the surface, while refraction is where the light enters the medium and changes direction according to the refractive index of the medium. The higher the refractive index, the more the light is refracted.

Reflection occurs when a material that it is unable to pass through does not absorb a light wave; the light is bounced back from the surface. Refraction occurs when light passes from one medium into another medium having a different index of refraction, and the ongoing light wave deviates from its initial direction. Dispersion is the effect on different wavelengths when a light wave passes from one medium to another and the light is separated into its constituent colors, as happens when a prism causes different colors to refract at different angles and white light becomes colors of the rainbow.

in terms of light or waves, refraction is bending, especially when passing through a new medium. Reflection is bouncing off such as light off a mirror or a ball off the ground

Light hits a surface and bounces off, which changes the direction of the light.

This change in direction is called reflection of light.

The main difference is in the main light-gathering device. In the case of a reflecting parabolic mirror; in the case of a refracting telescope, that's a lens.
