It is a procedure used to save an abscessed tooth by removing the dental pulp (nerve), usually if the tooth is dead or has had the pulp exposed (due to cavities or fractures). After the pulp is removed and any infection has been resolved, the hollow area left behind after the nerve is removed is filled in with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Before the days of root canals, most damaged teeth needed to be replaced.

AnswerWhen a cavity has reached the living part of the tooth, the pulp where the nerve lies, the dentist proceeds to heal the tooth with a root canal in order to avoid a bacterial infection. Once the bacteria have penetrated the pulp, the tooth must be devitalized or have its living tissue removed. The external tooth is still held fast by the root, but in most cases needs to have a cap or splint fitted.

Root canal therapy is a method of saving an infected tooth that would otherwise have to be removed. When an infection or tooth decay is allowed to advance into the nerve of the tooth, a root canal treatment is the only hope of keeping the tooth.

The dentist numbs the tooth with a local anesthetic, makes an opening in the tooth to gain access to the infection, and removes the infected tissue. The nerve is removed, the interior of the tooth is then disinfected, and the remaining space is filled with a plastic or rubber-like material to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth. A root canal treatment is usually followed by placing a crown over the tooth.

During a root canal treatment, the dentist will numb the tooth or area using local or injectable anesthetic, depending on the anxiety level as well as pain tolerance of the patient. A piece of rubber is slipped over the tooth to isolate it from neighboring teeth. The tooth is then drilled and a hole created through which the dentist will be able to remove infected or decayed material from inside the tooth. The tooth is then flushed with antiseptic solution.

First some anesthetic will be applied to the tooth and surrounding area. There are various kinds of procedures for this such as gas or injection into the gums. Once the dentist has verified that you have no feeling in the area, he will use a high speed drill through the top of the tooth breaking through the enamel layer. Once he reaches the second layer of the tooth known as the Dentin, they may use a lighter drill as the dentin is much softer than the enamel. Once they have gotten through the dentin layer, what remains is the pulp of the tooth which contains the nerve and blood vessels within the tooth. Some circumstances may require the dentist to apply an additional anisthetic inside the tooth if it is "hot" (a term for a tooth being very sensitive commonly used). They will then use a series of files to clean out the pulp of all the blood vessels and remaining nerv and make sure the root is completely disinfected. If it is infected they may apply a temporary filling and prescribe you some antibiotics until the tooth has been healed. Once no infection is present, the dentist will shape a canal to his liking and fill it with a clay like substance which will keep the already dead tooth reinforced within the gums. In some cases if you are having a root canal done on a front tooth or premolar, A post may be installed in the canal as well since these teeth have a single root which puts them at higher risk of fracturing. Once all of this has been done, a permanent filling will be applied to where he drilled and also to any other cavity associated with the tooth. Afterwards it is recommended to have a crown or cap put on the tooth to protect it in the future.

Inflamed or infected pulp (pulpitis) most often causes a toothache. To relieve the pain and prevent further complications, the tooth may be extracted (surgically removed) or saved by root canal treatment.

A root canal (drilling into the root of a tooth to kill the nerves) can be fairly painful even WITH anesthetics; without them (and Novocaine is a commonly-used drug in dental surgery) it would be excruciating. So the phrase means "very painful".

Is a dentist as qualified to do a root canal as an endodontist?

Yes, legally all general dentists are qualified to do root canals. But, IMO not as qualified as an endodontist who has gone through 2-3 years of additional training in the specialty and does ONLY root canals all day rather than once/week. I would only let an endodontist do my root canal and similarly (but more serious) I would only let a heart surgeon do my bypass surgery. == == All Dentists are qualified to do root canals.
