What is significant about plants that can grow in the desert?

Many of the desert trees are legumes and they fix or capture Nitrogen out of the air and are able to fertilize them selves as needed. This is significant because with out this ability they could not grow very large as the available nitrogen in desert soils is limited and the high PH makes it difficult for the plants to take up when it is available.
