Best Answer

Slip=100%-Efficiency

Efficiency=Observed Speed or Distance / Engine Speed or Distance

Mean Apparent Slip = Distance Run by Propeller - Distance Run by Ship / Distance Run by Propeller

Distance Run by Propeller = Picth X Total Engine Revolutions per day / 1852

I wish this can help those who are in need of this formula.

The propeller slip on a ship is calculated by comparing the distance the ship travels say in 24 hours with the theoretical distance the propeller should have travelled according to its pitch.

If the ships propeller has a pitch of 5 metres then it is trying to advance through the water at a rate of 5 metres / revolution. If the engine is turning at 100 RPM then this is 500 metres / minute or 720000 /day IE 720 kilometres.

If the mate calculates the ship actually travelled 700 kilometers then the apparent slip is

difference between engine miles and true miles / engine miles * 100

IE 2.7%

Why does a propeller shaft have a slip joint?

Slip JointThe propeller shaft has to meet both of the changes i.e., the angular change coming between the gear box and differential and the change in length of the distance between the gear box and differential. The propeller shaft is also not on the same line as the gear box output shaft but it runs to the rear axle at an angle because the level of the rear axle is lower than the gear box.¾ To adjust 'angular motion', universal joints are provided.¾ To adjust for the change in length of the propeller shaft, a slip joint is provided.

Why does my Yamaha 2 stroke outboard race when I open the throttle under load?

Provided the propeller is submerged low enough in the water, the most likely culprit would be a spun propeller hub. This condition causes the propeller to slip free from the hub, thereby causing the boat to lose propulsion.
