# What is stronger a concrete cylinder 4 by 8 inches or one 6 by 12 inches?

232425

## Answer

###### Wiki User

###### 01/11/2008

A 6 X 12 will hold more weight than a 4 X 8 of the same material because there is more surface area. Concrete strength is measured in psi, so a larger cylinder = more square inches = more pounds.

### How square feet in one yard of concrete?

It is impossible to answer the question as asked because square
feet is a measure of area and a "yard of concrete" actually refers
to a cubic yard of concrete.
However, if we make a couple assumptions we can answer the
question I THINK you're asking which is, "How many square feet of
concrete does one cubic yard of concrete yield if poured to a
typical depth of 4 inches?"
The inches of depth can be changed to suit the situation, but...

One cylinder would have a displacement of 21.2 cubic inches. By
multiplying this displacement by the number of cylinders, in this

inches. Area of circle pi x radius squared x length of stroke = one
cylinder's displacement. be sure to use same units for area as well
as stroke.

To figure out how many gallons are in a cylinder you can use the
following formula: Volume= pi x radius squared x height then divide
that by 231 Note: Measure the radius and height in inches this will
give you an answer in cubic inches, the reason for dividing by 231

Since 15 inches is not a nominal pipe size it must be assumed
