A subject-verb pattern is the pattern with which sentences are generally formulated. In English, we commonly use an SVO pattern. (subject-verb-object) "The dog catches the ball." Some languages use an SOV pattern. "The dog the balls catches."*
The subject is the part of the sentence doing something or experiencing the verb of the sentence.
John bought a soda. -- subject in bold
John feels happy. -- subject in bold
When looking for the subject of a sentence, your best betis usually to find the phrase just before the verb. -- subject in bold
The entire subject of the sentence can be a single word like 'John' or a string of words, like 'your best bet', which is made up of 2 adjectives (your and best) and a noun (bet).
Linking verbs are verbs that do not show the subject doing an action. Bought (or 'to buy') is an action verb. John is doing something.
Feels (or 'to feel') in the example is a linking verb. It connects John to something about him -- that he is happy. Likewise, 'is' in the third example is a linking verb.
Google linking verbs and you'll be able to find more examples. :)
The main verb can be followed by other various words which complete its meaning. These words form verb patterns.
For example:
I want a drink. - pattern is noun + verb + noun.
They are busy - pattern is noun + verb + adjective
The man was arrested by the police - pattern is noun + verb + past participle
Everyone in the room laughed
Subject, "they", verb, "entered", direct object, "room", (and "the" is an adjective of room). So subject verb direct object.
Subject, verb, prepositional phrase, adverbial phrase
The S-Iv pattern.the simplest of sentence patterns is composed of a subject and verb without a direct object or subject complement. It uses an intransitive verb, that is, a verb requiring no direct object.S stands for subject and Iv for intransitive verb.
subject - linking verb - adjective
its subject-verb-direct object.
subject verb
The sentence pattern is subject + verb + object. "This book" is the subject, "is" is the verb, and "a thesaurus" is the object.
subject verb subject
S-IV (subject-Intransitive) Intransitive verb-does not need an object because the verb Modifiers- add information to the subject or the verb or both:))

An intransitive verb is a verb with no direct object. egShe sings -- she = subject, sings = intransitive verbThey work -- They = subject, work = intransitive verbThe dog sleeps -- The dog = subject, sleeps = intransitive verb
