Surface Area is the term used to describe the area of an object that is exposed.

In other words, if you took a tennis ball, the outside of the ball is it's surface area. If you cut the tennis ball in half, the original outside part is still part of the surface area but now include the inside as well.

If you pound a solid sample in a pestle and mortar before reacting it with a liquid you drastically increase it's surface area and it reacts or dissolves many times faster than if you placed the solid lump in the test tube. The same thing happens when you crunch a sweet in your mouth, you get a sudden increase in flavour and the sweet disappears really quickly.

Euclid is not the only geometry.

1) A space is a region in which a construction may be erected or an action may take place.

2) a surface divides a space into two regions. The surface need not be large or infinite - it is sufficient that it separates the two regions in our area of interest.

This is the common surface of our everyday experience - the surface of a lake or of an apple.

[Then 3) A line is the intersection of two surfaces. The edge of a table - the common line. ]
