They were his disciples. Most of them were fishermen, one was an incometax collector and the another who was very attached to monetary posetions. They had a 3 and a half year journey preaching the gospel, performing miracles and attending the sick. At about the beguining of that journey spreading the gospel was when the sermon of the mount took place. Registered in the gospel of Mathews chapter 5 is the history of the most complete sermon given on Christianity before Christians were named after Jesus the Teacher. You will notice that in the chapter 9 verse 9 is when he calls mathew to follow him. You can understand the sermon of the mount was at the beguining of the 3 years he spread the gospel until crucified at the age of 33.
