The Coahuiltecan people is a collective name for the many small, autonomous bands of Indians who inhabited southernmost Texas, the Rio Grande valley and adjacent Mexico. The Coahuiltecans were non-agricultural hunter-gatherers who wore little clothing. They lived in small bands with no political unity above the level of the band and the family. They were nomads who carried their possessions on their backs. At each campsite, they built small circular huts with frames consisting of four bent poles covered with woven mats. At times, they came together in large groups of several bands and hundreds of people, but mostly their encampments were small, consisting of a few huts and a few dozen people.
The Coahuiltecan Indians had rituals that included ceremonies for funerals and difficult times. They had ceremonies to celebrate the seasons, boys coming of age, and war victories that lasted for days with singing, dancing, and feasting.
