Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister, OM, FRS (5 April 1827 - 10 February 1912) was an English surgeon who promoted the idea of sterile surgery while working at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He successfully introduced carbolic acid (phenol) to sterilize surgical instruments and to clean wounds, which led to reduced post-operative infections and made surgery safer for patients.
Not so much science as medicine, as he showed that killing microbes prior to and during surgery would greatly reduce the risk of infection. What seems "obvious" to a four-year-old today -- "Wash your hands to keep the germs off them" -- was completely unknown to the medical establishment prior to Lister.
he discovered the antiseptic surgery. or in other words, he contributed the sterile surgery which he can use as an English surgeon.
He introduced the concept of micro-organisms like bacteria causing infections. sterilize techniques in surgery were a direct result of his ideas, which produced lower complication rates.
