The Earth's atmosphere is a layer of gases that surrounds the Earth. It is composed of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, 0.03% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases. This thin gaseous layer insulates the Earth from extreme temperatures, keeps heat inside the atmosphere and also shields the Earth from much of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation.

The Earth's atmosphere is about 300 miles (480 km) thick, but most of the atmosphere (about 80%) is within 10 miles (16 km) of the surface of the Earth. There is no exact place where the atmosphere ends; it just gets thinner and thinner, until it merges with outer space.

Why is there no light in space?

Its because there is NOTHING between each star, that light can react against, it's something to do with air, or the atmosphere, because there is no light on the moon, (like there is on earth) since it has no atmosphere. or any sort of gas. The atmosphere scatters the light, no atmosphere, no visible light, (like the light on earth).
