"The distance" is an English equivalent of the Italian phrase La lontananza. The phrase perhaps most famously occurs in the title to an arietta by by Italian Opera composer Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). A quick translation of the arietta's two brief verses will be found below:
Now that I am taken from you,
Now that you are stolen from me,
With the thorns of my life
I wouldn't exchange the flower of other men's (lives).
If a heart is alone in suffering,
That suffering turns into pain,
Dearly beloved, dearest love!
