The past tense form would depend on the subject of the sentence, such as:

The Hebrew word for freedom is either kherut (חירות) or khofesh (חופש). Kherut is freedom from slavery or oppression. Khofesh is freedom to do what you want, such as a vacation.

Both words are exactly the same in Biblical Hebrew and Modern Hebrew. The kh is a gutteral sound. If you don't pronounce it right, you could change the meaning of the words.
