The mountain system that is at the western side of the eastern seaboard (in the northeast US and elsewhere) is called the Appalachian Mountains.
Certain parts of the Appalachians also have other names given by specific states or early settlers. For example, the mountains in western Massachusetts are part of the Appalachians but are usually called the Berkshire Mountains by the people of Massachusetts.
The Appalachians in northern New York state are called the Adirondack Mountains and those west of the lower Hudson River are called the Catskill Mountains. Additional local and regional names are used along much of the Appalachian mountain chain.
The Northeast United States includes nine states, defined by the US Census Bureau.
The highest mountain in the area is Mt Washington, in New Hampshire, it is 6288 ft high.
The highest points of the other eight states are:
Connecticut: 2379 ft, Mt Frisell
Maine: 5270 ft, Mt Katahdin
Massachusetts: 3489 ft, Mt Greylock
Rhode Island: 811 ft, Jerimoth Hill
Vermont: 4395 ft, Mt Mansfield
New Jersey: 1803 ft, High Point
New York: 5343 ft, Mt Marcy
Pennsylvania: 3213 ft, Mt Davis.
The Appalachian Mountains are located in the eastern part of the United States. They span through New England states including Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
