Why do shooting stars travel through space whilst other stars remain static?
Shooting stars are not actually stars. It is just a simple name for what are really meteors. A meteor is a small object, sometimes even as small a piece of dust, that enters our atmosphere and burns up. As it does so we see a meteor in the sky. It does look like a fast moving star, which is why people call them that, but they are not stars. As I type this, the date is Sunday the 9th of August, 2009. At this time every year there are an increased amount of meteors in the sky, with the most always being on the night of August the 12th. This is known as the Perseid Meteor Shower, or just the Perseids. We are passing through the tail of an old comet, so there is a lot of dirt around us, so we get more coming into our atmosphere. This causes more meteors. If you are patient and the night sky is clear, you may see some over the coming days, not just on August the 12th. There are other Meteor showers too, like the Leonids in November. On any night of the year there is a chance of seeing meteors, but during meteor showers, there is a greater chance of seeing them. If you get to see this answer in time, go and look on any clear night this week and you have a chance of seeing some.
