It beeps to tell you when you are in close proximity to something eg: when you are about to hit something. The faster the beeps the closer you are until it is a solid sound and you are inches away. It is quite sensitive and will detect branches and non threatening obstacles also, so can be turned off by pressing the PDC button under the stereo

it means the PDC (park distance control) does not work properly, could be damaged or faulty, could also be a coding problem. This ideally needs to be checked at your local dealer. Adamski (adam.francis@snowsgroup.co.uk)
The Park Distance Control, or PDC, is a set of sensors that allow a driver to assess the distance of an object behind them when reversing, generally to park. An acoustic signal, starting at a low frequency, increases frequency as the driver gets closer to the object (car) behind them. If one lives in a wet, snowy or very cold locale, the PDC is known to freeze up, (incorrectly) triggering the PDC FAILURE message. One's should first defrost and/or dry the PDC module (located in the trunk of the vehicle) with a hairdryer, fan or other ambient (and not dangerous) heat/air source. If the PDC FAILURE message stays on, then one may need to replace the sensor.
It means that the park distance control module has a fault in the system. It's a warning that the system is not operating properly. Most likely a fault with one of the bumber sensors.
