Activated carbon is often used in water purification. It reduces VOC's (volatile organic chemicals). Solid carbon blocks reduce even more percentages than granular or powered activated charcoal. It also gets rid of bad taste in water i.e. chlorine or iodine. It is used as an ancillary to chemical treatments of the water with bad tasting chemicals as well as highly reduces the presence of those chemicals such as chlorine or iodine. These chemicals kill the viruses and most bacteria and protozoa that can lead to water borne diseases.

The purpose is to be an immediate interdiction in the event of toxic overdose when the substance was taken orally. The coal has been subjected to a process the gives the tiny granules a very vast expanse of surface area/binding sites. The idea is that the drug, which is not yet introduced into the bloodstream can be mitigated by having the charcoal bind and deactivate the overdosed / toxic / offending agent. It is often highly effective but timing is crucial. NEVER administer activated charcoal to someone who has taken a CNS depressant as they may aspirate after emesis (inhale their puke while passed out and suffocate or suffer acidic damage to the lungs). If the airway is not secured after administration of a cns depressant on toxic amounts then coal is contraindicated. An anti-emetic may reduce the danger by way of preventing puking but it will likely also increase the level of cns depression. Coal administration is extremely useful for pets however. If you suspect a pet of consuming household medications then preventative administration of the coal can save hundreds of dollars and your animal's life. I have just used 260 mg of coal to counter 12 mg of alprazolam and I can still write out the Krebs' cycle.... Its been 3 hours too. I'd say its effective. But then again I would not do such silly things as this. Do them again that is.

It can absorb large amounts of poisons quickly. In addition, it is non-toxic, may be stored for a long time, and can be conveniently administered at home.
