It is now considered secure and has made recoveries since femoval of livestock has allowed plant to grow back. Introduced species remains a threat especially stoats, common myna, and rats. They prefer broadleaf forests below 1500 metres but will tolerate small remnant patches, regrowth, exotic places, and well-planted suburbs. They travel in singly, pairs, or in family groups. They, however, will gather in number and food sources with other birds.
