Barre, Vermont is the self described granite capital of the world. The title is well deserved since Barre granite is known throughout the world. The huge granite deposits were discovered at Millstone Hill after the War of 1812.
Vermont is also famous for its marble deposits. White marble from Vermont has been used all over the world in monuments and sculptures. Vermont's grey and green marbles are also prized.
