ANSWER / OPINION These terms can be changed by current usage, but my preferred interpretation is that hackers attempt to compromise security of a computer system to gain access to information or services. Crackers attempt to modify software to bypass restrictions placed there by the authors, usually copy protection. As someone who occasionally writes software, I have very strong feelings about crackers allowing people to steal my work. I also have strong feelings about hackers making use of my computer system's resources or my personal information without my consent. (Don't argue the point unless you don't mind me taking your car instead of mine when I need to go somewhere. On second thought, don't argue even then.)
