The main function of the pectoralis major is to assist with the movement of the arms. It also plays a huge role in deep inhalation by pulling the ribcage out to make room for the lungs to expand.

Your chest is used in any movement that requires arm motion in lateral directions.

Examples: opening a door knob, opening a bottle cap, clapping
Muscles in the chest help move the arm and shoulder and some help in breathing.

The pectoral muscle (pectoralis major) has four functions:

-Flexion of the humerus as in throwing a ball side-arm.

-It helps to move your humerus as in flapping your arms.

-Rotates your humerus medially as in arm Wrestling.

-Helps deep inspiration as in taking a deep breath.

It is also responsible for keeping the arm attached to the trunk of the body.
