What did they use for a ball in water polo?

In the very early days of water polo they used a leather ball which absorbed water throughout the game therefore by the end of the game it was a lot heavier than at the start and actually 'floated' a foot or so under the surface of the water. This made the game more a test of strength and stamina rather than skill. More recently Indian rubber was used
