Where is the halfway around the world point in the US?
The US is geographically very large. Every point on the globe has what is called an antipode, the point exactly on the other side following a line straight down through the earth's center. The antipode of Providence RI, for example, will be somewhere off the southwest coast of Australia, in the Indian ocean.

How did the Antipodes Islands get their name?
The Antipodes Islands were named by Captain Henry Waterhouse and crew, on the British ship Reliant, as the first Europeans to discovered them in 1800. The name was originally Penantipodes from Latin paene: almost and Greek anti: opposite and podos: foot, because it is the nearest land to the antipode of London. An antipode has the exact opposite latitude and longitude, and is on the opposite side of the earth from a location. The islands are the true antipode of a point in the English Channel off the north coast of France. The closest land is Point de Barfleur near Cherbourg in Basse-Normandie.
How long does it take to get to the other side of the earth?
Roughly speaking, the diameter of the earth is 24,000 miles. So for any person to get to the opposite point on the globe (her/his antipode) would mean a trip of at least 12,000 miles. When I travel from the northeast US to Melbourne, it takes perhaps 20 to 22 hours from door to door, and that is not quite my antipode. That time includes waiting for flights, of course. My antipode is off the southwest coast of Australia, smack dab in the Indian Ocean (not China). So on a practical level, and using commercial travel systems, I'd say at least one full day.

How do you find the geographic opposite coordinate to a location on a globe?
Latitude is simple: replace N with S and vice versa: if something is at latitude 43 degrees north latitude, the antipode (which is the technical term for the "opposite coordinate") will be at latitude 43 degrees south. Longitude is more complicated. You need to replace E with W and subtract the numerical value (in degrees) from 180 to get the longitude of the antipode. So the antipode of San Diego (33N 117W or thereabouts) would be 33S 63E, which is in the Indian Ocean (the nearest dry land is probably Reunion Island, roughly 700 miles away to the northwest). The only locations in the US where the antipode is actually dry land (and you could "tunnel through the Earth" and come out somewhere that wasn't underwater) are most of Hawaii (antipodes in Zambia) and a few spots in the extreme north of Alaska (antipodes in Antarctica).

Why does it take so long to fly from London England to New Zealand?
The antipode of London, the place on earth that is farthest away, is off the southeast coast of New Zealand, by about 1000 km. So New Zealand is just about as far away from London England as you can get (and still be on earth). Use the link below to find antipodes, but be careful. If you find an antipode and then try to zoom in, the maps reset.
