Power is energy / time, so energy is power x time. One kilowatt for one hour will consume 1 kWh (kilowatt-hour) in energy. Alternately, you can do the calculation in joule, and in seconds: one kilowatt = 1000 watt = 1000 J/s. Multiply this by 3600 seconds, and you get 3.6 million Joule. Of course, 1 kWh is the same as 3,600,000 Joule.

It depends on where you are, what kind of customer you are, (residential or industrial), and what time of day it is. Many power companies charge more for electricity during peak hours than during off-peak hours. Call your local utility and ask.
